Church transformed as Bible Society builds Mary Jones World

Date added: 19/02/15

For the last five months the church that will be home to Mary Jones World visitor centre has been covered in scaffolding while workmen carry out repairs to the Grade 2 listed building. Now, with the work on the roof and masonry complete it's due to be removed this week.

Work started on the church at Llanycil near Bala in February and since then the inside of the building has also been transformed.

The new concrete floor is down and carpenters and electricians have moved in to begin fitting out building. Pipes have been laid from two boreholes, across the churchyard and into the building to provide underfloor heating.

Site manager Stan Owen says, ‘We are pushing on quite a bit inside the church now. There is a drying time on the new floor and then we will lay floor tiles. We are also working on the visitor centre entrance from the road and the parking area.’

Visitors to the new centre will hear the story of Mary Jones, a 15-year-old girl who walked 25 miles from her home across the Welsh mountains to Bala, to get a Bible from Revd Thomas Charles. She had saved for six years to afford a copy and the Methodist minster was so moved by her determination that he went on to help establish Bible Society.

As well as Mary Jones story, visitors to the centre will also find out about the Bible’s place in the history and culture of Wales and Bible Society's work here and abroad. Mary Jones World will open in October.

Am y pum mis diwethaf gorchuddiwyd yr eglwys a fydd yn gartref i ganolfan ymwelwyr Byd Mary Jones â sgaffaldiau tra roedd gweithwyr yn atgyweirio’r adeilad rhestredig Gradd 2. Erbyn hyn gyda’r gwaith ar y to a’r gwaith maen wedi ei gwblhau dylent gael ei symud yr wythnos hon.

Dechreuodd y gwaith ar yr eglwys yn Llanycil ger y Bala ym mis Chwefror ac ers hynny mae tu mewn yr eglwys wedi ei weddnewid.

Gosodwyd y llawr concrit a symudodd y seiri a’r trydanwyr i mewn i ddechrau ffitio’r adeilad at ei gilydd. Gosodwyd pibellau o ddau dwll turio ar draws y fynwent ac i mewn i’r adeilad i ddarparu gwresogi dan y llawr.

Dywedodd rheolwr y safle, Stan Owen ‘rydym yn gyrru ymlaen gryn dipyn tu mewn i’r eglwys rŵan. Mae angen amser i sychu ar y llawr newydd ac wedyn byddwn yn gosod y teils. Rydym hefyd yn gweithio ar fynediad canolfan yr ymwelwyr o’r ffordd a’r maes parcio.’

Bydd ymwelwyr â’r ganolfan newydd yn clywed stori Mary Jones merch 15 mlwydd oed a gerddodd 25 milltir o’i chartref ar draws mynyddoedd Cymru i’r Bala, i gael Beibl gan y Parchedig Thomas Charles. Roedd wedi cynilo am chwe blynedd i allu fforddio copi ac roedd y gweinidog Methodist wedi ei effeithio gymaint gan ei phenderfyniad nes iddo fynd ati i sefydlu Cymdeithas y Beibl.

Yn ogystal â stori Mary Jones, bydd ymwelwyr â’r ganolfan hefyd yn canfod lle’r Beibl yn hanes a diwylliant Cymru a gwaith Cymdeithas y Beibl yma a thramor. Bydd Byd Mary Jones yn agor ym mis Hydref.
